The Fire Commission is an elected body of five persons that are responsible for overseeing all aspects of Fire Protection in the Town of Caton. Among their responsibilities are the purchase and maintenance of apparatus needed in the event of an emergency. Further responsibilities are the execution of the policies, of County, State and National entities such as the New York State Fire Academy, New York State Department of Health, the Office of the Comptroller, as well as the NFPA to name a few .
The Fire District is a separate Government entity from the Town of Caton local Government, and presents its budget to the Town for collection in the annual tax bill. The amount of taxes allowed to be levied by the Fire Commission are calculated on a percentage of the previous years value of the Town of Caton. Budget meetings are held to calculate line items based on the Comptrollers recommendations for Fire District Budgets. .
Capitol Projects are projected and CD accounts are established for multiple years of savings toward those Capital Improvements. To use monies saved for purchase of Capital Projects, the Fire Commission must send the project specifications to bid and hold a public referendum allowing for the money to be spent. Apparatus purchases and major Building improvements are approved at the discretion of the voting public and not a board, unlike our local government.
The Board of Fire Commissioners convene a regular meeting the second Monday of each month at 6:30 PM. The public is invited to attend.
